THE ARTIST
Frans de Paula Ferg was an Austrian painter and draughtsman born in Vienna in 1689, celebrated for his lively market and village scenes in the Flemish and Dutch manner. He studied under Nikolaus Gottfried Sauerbronn and Hans Graebner, but his style was profoundly influenced by the Northern tradition of Pieter van Laer and David Teniers the Younger. By the early eighteenth century, Ferg had established himself in London, where his refined cabinet paintings found eager patrons among English collectors fascinated by Continental genre scenes.
Ferg’s compositions are characterized by their miniaturist precision, warm tonality, and vibrant human activity. His figures, often dressed in bright reds and blues, animate rustic settings — fairs, markets, or harbours — which he painted with both humour and sympathy. These works reflect his ability to merge ...
... the Flemish love of anecdotal detail with the ordered, picturesque balance favoured by the Rococo. Though his life ended in poverty, Ferg’s paintings remained popular throughout the eighteenth century, often engraved and collected across Europe.
